Highly sensitive people are almost always incredibly empathic individuals who sense what others are feeling on an intuitive level. This is a beautiful gift that can make it hard to know how to set appropriate boundaries. When an individual’s sensitivity to others and to the world is overwhelming, it can be confusing to distinguish the emotional experience of others from one's own. In the absence of the appropriate degree of emotional differentiation, an individual is likely to feel emotionally flooded and overstimulated much of the time. This can make it difficult to express oneself effectively and may lead to co-dependent relationships and unhealthy coping skills.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a process of inquiry focused on understanding the underlying causes of our conditions. Bringing light to the unconscious processes that influence our choices is the path to healing both mind and spirit. Insight, both cognitive and emotional, brings self-awareness that is the first crucial step in a dialectic between acceptance and change. It is often a seemingly circuitous path that unwinds over time in an organic process unique to each person. There is no formula. There is a lot of not-knowing. This can be scary but it is also the space for possibility. In our work together, I will utilize an eclectic array of interventions including guided imagery, dream interpretation, mindfulness-based somatic techniques and cognitive or dialectical behavioral therapy, as they are appropriate.
By learning to employ mindfulness techniques and access your own inner wisdom, I can help you regulate emotional intensity, locate a stable sense of self, root in your own resilience and cope with an unpredictable world. Improved insight and self awareness along with the ability to manage your emotions and set firm boundaries are some of the ways to improve the way you relate to the world that can have lasting impact on the quality of your life and personal relationships. The goal is to find that critical balance between finding acceptance and making change, learning to make space for opposite and contradictory emotions, see the nuance in these polarities, and work towards a holistic integration in which mind, body and spirit are in alignment.
